Dear IEM Staff and Families,
Governor, Gavin Newsom, announced last week that COVID vaccinations will be required for all school-age students to attend in-person instruction once the FDA gives full approval to the vaccine. This timeline will most likely be in the next school year (2022/2023). It does not go into effect now. At this time, based on the language we have received, it appears independent study instruction may be excluded from this requirement.
This announcement, and the recent mandates for staff to be vaccinated or conduct weekly COVID testing, bring mixed emotions depending on the person. Having empathy for the many positions that are taken and the emotions that are often attached to those positions has never been more important. Not only are children watching and learning from our actions, they also model what they see adults doing in their lives. May our school community continue to elevate civility in our interactions and conversations with each other.
I want to mention our exceptional school team. The recent public health decisions are not theirs to make, nor can they change them. Public health mandates are determined for schools by the California Department of Public Health. Please allow our team to serve you effectively and please withhold personal attacks or legal threats against them as they implement these required policies.
We will do everything we can to get through this together.
